Clyde Park takes out National Award for 2017 Shiraz

Moorabool Valley winery Clyde Park is celebrating a huge win at the National Wine Show in Canberra, taking out the trophy for Best Shiraz with their 2017 Clyde Park Estate Shiraz.

As Australia’s premier national wine show, entries are invited from across the country in premium classes for table, sparkling and fortified wines with wines having to first qualify through Australian regional and capital city wine shows.

Clyde Park owner Terry Jongebloed, said that this trophy was particularly special for the team because it really solidified the quality of Clyde Park, and the wider Geelong region.

“The purpose of the Australian Wine Show is to judge and promote the best of the best Australian wines, so for our wine to be judged against some of the best Shiraz wines in the country and win, it’s really a great honour and we are truly humbled to take out such an amazing award.

“Our Estate vineyard is almost 25-years old and is maintained with our own compost and hay, not using herbicides. This means that our vineyards are healthier and therefore, the vines are more balanced. Luke Polson, our viticulturist, has put many hours into making our vineyard better as the seasons continue, and this is a major contributor to the quality of our wine.”

Clyde Park winemaker Ben Mullen, said that with some of Geelong’s oldest vines in this cool climate region, the team balance a hands-on approach in the vineyard with a hands-off approach in the winery, to allow the fruit and terroir to come alive in every bottle.

“The 2017 Clyde Park Estate Shiraz is bright and floral, showing lots of purple flowers and berries, which flow through to tight underlying tannin that is brought on by the use of some whole bunches and large format oak into the final blend. It’s a classic cool climate Geelong Shiraz.”

Established in 1979 and located in the Moorabool Valley northwest of Geelong, Clyde Park’s uncompromising approach to winemaking and viticulture has seen the brand move to the forefront of Geelong’s wine region growth as a premium wine region of Australia.

In a recent review for the 2019 Wine Companion James Halliday remarked that, “the quality of Clyde Park wines is consistently exemplary.”

A popular wedding venue with some of the most spectacular views in the region, Clyde Park bistro and cellar door are open for tastings 7-days a week.
